The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education and the British Council-Southern Africa are convening a provincial conference on the implementation of school sport in Gauteng.
The conference, “Developing Young Champions”, will be held at the Birchwood Conference Centre on 25 to 26 March 2010.
“The implementation of sport at the school level is the foundation of the country’s sport development continuum. It is the place where, at an early age; a love of sports is fostered and where our children learn that different people with different cultures can learn and play together harmoniously. School sport also allows us to identify sporting talent at its developmental stages and to invest in this talent so that our country can proudly produce more high performing athletes that can stand their ground and succeed in globally competitive events,” said Nelisiwe Moerane, the MEC of SACR.
This conference brings together key strategic level decision-makers that are involved in school sport to discuss, debate and decide on the most appropriate and relevant approach to delivering school sport in the current South African context, and the Gauteng Province in particular.
The conference will focus on two key areas; namely:
* Re-engineering the Gauteng Provincial Government’s (GPG) approach to implementing school sport.In particular, the conference will consider one of three possible models or approaches to implementing school sport in the province and
* The placement and funding of school sport, i.e. should the mandate and responsibility for school sport continue to be with two departments as is currently the case or should it be with one department.
Following the two focus areas, the MEC is upbeat that solutions would be found in the implementation of school sport.
“I am confident that the discussions and resolutions of the conference will guide the next stages of development and implementation of an effective and successful school sport programme in Gauteng,” MEC Moerane said.
