Deputy President to address the South African Women’s HIV Prevention Summit

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will on Friday, 21 August 2009, deliver the keynote address at the second day of the Women’s HIV Prevention Summit.

The summit, starting on 20 August 2009, will be a platform for information sharing and discussion on meeting the NSP target to reduce by 50% the rate of new HIV infections by 2011. Recommendations formulated at this Summit will feed back to the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC).

Topics to be covered include amongst others:

* updates on progress made toward reaching the HIV and AIDS and STI National Strategic Plan for South Africa 2007-2011 (NSP) prevention targets
* the current evidence to support HIV prevention interventions
* new prevention technologies, including microbicides and male circumcision, and what they might mean to women
* discussion on priorities of current HIV prevention programmes for girls and women
* the policy framework that supports or impedes HIV prevention and interventions
* discussion on SANAC women’s sector response on HIV prevention.
