The Department of Trade and Industry to launch 2009 Technology for Women in Business awards

The Department of Trade and Industry, (the dti), will officially launch the 2009 Technology for Women in Business (TWIB) awards under the theme "maximising your success through technology" in Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, tomorrow, Thursday, 2 July 2009.

The TWIB awards are instituted to reward women achievers in recognising the significant impact they have made in various sectors of the economy through the applications of technology to create a competitive edge for their businesses. The awards have over the years, played a critical role in encouraging South African women from all provinces to adopt technology as one critical business enabler.

The dti as a lead Department on Gender and Women's Economic Empowerment intends to address the market failures of economic policies and programmes in addressing gender equity in South Africa. It is further aimed at fast tracking women's economic empowerment whilst ensuring that the issue is institutionalised as a critical aspect of Government's national economic agenda.

The purpose of the launch is to:

* draw more women from business organisations that promote technology use in women's businesses
* Improve the number and standard of entrants for women owned businesses especially those that utilise high powered technology to innovate and invent their businesses
* Foster an environment where they can positively influence other women by laying an emphasis on importance and objectives of utilising technology to enhance profitable businesses.

Nominations forms can be obtained from the dti website: http://www.thedti.gov.za.
