The Department of Social Development, giving youth hope

The Department of Social Development, will be hosting Youth Participation Workshops for youth with disabilities, during the month of July 2010.

The first of these workshops took place in the Cape Metro region yesterday, 8 July 2010, with 50 participants from the Department of Social Development, as well as youth from the community.

These workshops provide youth both employed and unemployed with the opportunity to brainstorm and bridge the gap between service delivery and the lack of opportunities for youth with disabilities. The youth are also given a platform to voice their concerns with the department, and assist with designing the programmes aimed at empowering them.

The purpose of the workshops is to promote social integration and self representation of youth with disabilities. The Department of Social Development hopes to design future programmes which are more responsive to youth with disabilities, as well as programmes that will address the needs of youth with disabilities.

The Department of Social Development aims to more efficiently serve young people with disabilities and in so doing, envisage that youth will be empowered, thus giving hope to all youth.

Workshops are scheduled to take place across the province throughout the month of July, with today's workshop taking place in the Cape Winelands.
