Department of Science and Technology celebrates women in science

The Department of Science and Technology is celebrating Women's Month, by recognising a number of South Africa's leading female scientists through the Women in Science Awards.

The Minister in the Presidency for the National Planning Commission, Trevor Manuel, will be the guest speaker at the awards' gala function to be held at the Southern Sun Hotel, OR Tambo International in Kempton Park at 18h00, 13 August 2010.

Earlier in the day, the Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor will deliver the opening address at National Advisory Council (NACI) on Innovation’s Science, Engineering and Technology for Women (SET4W) Symposium to be held at Premier Hotel, 573 Church Street, Pretoria at 09h00.

Held under the theme: "Enhancing the leadership roles of women in Science, Technology and Innovation", the symposium will highlight international policy experiences, an overview of the South African policy environment for women in science, the work of Science, Engineering and Technology for Women Committee on National Advisory Council for Innovation and experiences of women scientists as beneficiaries of gender policies.

About the Women in Science Awards

The 2010 Women in Science Awards are part of the department's efforts to increase the number of female scientists and researchers in the country. They have also been created to increase women's access to research professions in the country, and to profile successful scientists and researchers as role models for younger women and girls.

The categories for the 2010 Women in Science Awards are as follows:

  • distinguished woman scientist award (life sciences)
  • distinguished woman scientist award (academic excellence in the social sciences or humanities)
  • distinguished young woman scientist award (life sciences)
  • distinguished young woman researcher award (social sciences or humanities)
  • achiever award for a woman scientist in industry
  • achiever award for a woman researcher or innovator in indigenous knowledge systems
  • fellowships for women scientists
  • TATA Africa Scholarships for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology
