Webinar for artists with disabilities brought to you by DWYPD and DSAC.
The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) will host a webinar for artists with disabilities to the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in Arts.
The webinar seeks to foster for inclusion, integration and promotion of artists with disabilities into mainstream arts and culture sector; to remove the limitation of placing persons with disabilities in a system that does not promote arts and cultural activities of persons with disabilities and not as active participants in the country’s arts and cultural programs.
During DWYPD 2022 4 cities tour, there was a realisation of a greater need for persons with disabilities to be aware of and exposed to the funding opportunities available within DSAC. Through this collaboration, empowerment workshops will be conducted as most of the artists are not professionally organised. These workshops will provide access to funding, on business and professionalization of their artistry/crafts, and how artists should interact with different funding schemes.
The webinar will also look at government interventions in mainstreaming of the arts industry and possible collaboration with different industry stakeholders (private or public) to assist artists. Furthermore, link them with different DSAC funding platforms in their provinces. In line with the 365 days calendar on disabilities, September is
Albinism Awareness Month and International Month for Deaf People, known in South Africa as Deaf Awareness Month, while 23 September is International Day of Sign Language, and 3 November-3 December is Disability Rights Awareness Month.
The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, is working with various key stakeholders and implementing Departments on the development of
tailored interventions to help mitigate the challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities
in the Arts across sectors and more specifically within industries.
