The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) will host its inaugural Energy Summit at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 7-9 March 2018 - to examine the current energy landscape and to define the energy future role for Local Government.

In the context of a changing energy environment, the South African Energy sector must act in due haste and diligence to define an ideal Future Local Government Utility. To be convened under the theme “Defining the Energy Future for Local Government in South Africa”, the SALGA Energy Summit 2018 will be attended by high ranking political leadership in the country; in finance, economics and the energy sector, who are responsible and obliged to examine the possible scenarios for the South African Energy sector and to agree on how to handle the imminent change imposed by energy demands.

The President of the Republic, His Excellency, Cyril Ramaphosa, will deliver the keynote address during the opening of the Summit on 7 March 2018. Among the high ranking guests expected at the Summit will be SALGA President, Parks Tau, the Premier of Gauteng David Makhura will deliver the Premier’s welcome address and the newly appointed Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe will discuss the South African energy landscape.

Some of the Summit highlights will include various panel discussions which will cover topics such as the Energy Transitions and Megatrends in the Energy Space, Future Models and paving the way forward: how to implement the Energy Transition in South Africa and to design the energy future for local government, to name a few.

The 2018 SALGA Energy Summit  will focus on the following issues:

  • Understanding how the energy transition manifests economically, legally, financially and institutionally for Local Government;
  • Pursuing a consensus of the political leadership in the energy sector to agree that change is necessary;
  • Examining the possible scenarios for the South African Energy sector and defining an ideal Future business model for local government
  • And developing and defining a country compact for the energy sector.
