South Africa and Germany celebrate 16 years of research collaboration

The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom will deliver a keynote address at an international workshop on spectroscopy held at Stellenbosch University's Institute for Advanced Studies on Tuesday, 20 November 2012, from 09h00.

South Africa and Germany have a joint fund for research in the areas of agricultural science, life science, earth science, mathematical science, physical science, health science and engineering. About R80 million has been invested to date, with more than 400 projects funded at research institutions and universities, sometimes with industrial partners.

To celebrate the successes of their 16-year collaboration, South Africa and Germany are hosting the 2012/2013 German-South African Year of Science in both countries. This will include exhibitions, seminars and workshops on priority areas.  The international workshop on spectroscopy is part of this series of activities.

During the Year of Science, the two countries aim to increase the profile of both countries as key locations for research and innovation, and to encourage young scientists to do more collaborative work.

All media are invited to attend.
