Science and Technology on Scientometrics and STI Policy Conference, 6 Nov

South Africa's science policy in the spotlight

The Director-General of Science and Technology, Dr Phil Mjwara, will on 06 November address a conference at Stellenbosch University on the role of centres of excellence in informing science, technology and innovation (STI) policy in South Africa.

Dr Mjwara will be speaking at a conference hosted by the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Scientometrics and STI Policy (SciSTIP), to discuss the strengthening of the country's STI Policy. The conference seeks to formally introduce SciSTIP to the general scientific community.

SciSTIP, led by Prof. Johann Mouton, was launched earlier this year to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary research among research institutions, provide high-end skills development in priority areas, and improve the general understanding of interaction between scientific development and the economy.

The CoE was established in response to the limited and scattered capacity in the country.  It is expected to lead not only to advanced knowledge and human capital development, but also, more importantly, to improved decision-making in respect of science, technology and innovation policy.

It is thus envisaged the CoE will address long-term and important research questions, including in areas already identified in strategic evaluation studies by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
