Department of Public Works and Infranstructure ramps up women participation in the built environment and oceans economy

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure recognizes the significant role that women play in the Oceans Economy, the maritime sector and the built environment. Women are active participants in various sectors related to the maritime industry contributing to economic growth and development.

In the Oceans Economy, women are breaking barriers and taking on leadership roles in areas such as marine research, aquaculture, and coastal tourism. Their expertise and knowledge are crucial in ensuring sustainable practices and the preservation of marine resources. Women are also making strides in maritime transportation, logistics, and shipbuilding, bringing diversity and fresh perspectives to the industry.

Moreover, women are vital in the development and management of small harbours. Their involvement in harbour infrastructure planning, maintenance, and operations is instrumental in enhancing efficiency and safety. Women are demonstrating their skills in harbour management, including the coordination of vessel traffic, harbour security, and environmental protection measures.
 
In light of all of the above, the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure has invited women who are in are working and are interested to enter the construction and maritime sector to an Imbizo in Cape Town. The Imbizo aims to engage women compatriots in order to get their perspectives, challenges, opportunities and solutions in opening these fields further to women.
