Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa to deliver keynote address at the SAPS Summit on suicide prevention

The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa will tomorrow deliver a keynote address at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Summit on Suicide Prevention.

Suicides in the SAPS have been an issue of concern since the middle nineties whereby a Suicide Awareness Strategy was implemented in the organisation.  Thereafter suicide prevention and awareness became an organisational strategic function and objective.

A three-day summit will be hosted by the National Commissioner of Police, General Riah Phiyega, senior management of the SAPS as well as invited experts, researchers and other stakeholders. The objectives of the Summit are:

  • To discuss suicides within the organization critically with internal and external role players and stakeholders;
  • To be able to, at the end of the summit produce a pointed plan to address suicides within the SAPS.

Members of the media are invited to attend. The event will unfold as follows:

Official opening of the Summit:
The welcoming address will be conducted by the National Commissioner of Police, General Riah Phiyega and Minister Mthethwa will deliver the keynote address.
