Gauteng to host a leading-edge geographical renaming workshop

Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), will be hosting a leading-edge geographical renaming workshop together with the Gauteng Geographical Names Committee.

The workshop is part of government’s effort to rename streets and iconic monuments. Some of the issues that will lead to discussions include the standardization of geographical names for the province. 

According to MEC Lebogang Maile “geographical naming process is an integral part of Nation Building and Social Transformation”.

The workshop will also empower municipalities in handling matters relating to the renaming process including consultations with various stakeholders. Furthermore, the workshop attempts to identify names with local authorities to change.
