Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs hosts virtual Digital Economy Summit, 14 Aug

As we count down to the Virtual Digital Economy Summit, to be held tomorrow at 10h00, we have ensured that the session tomorrow is strictly “Woman to Woman.”

With the outbreak of COVID-19 and the advent of 4IR, our view is that women must not be left behind in this technological change and the emergence of new trends. We now have sectors such as the Internet of Things, robotics, artificial intelligence and 3D printing.

In view of these issues I have highlighted, I wish to state the following:-

  • A business-as-usual is not an option.
  • We are determined to use all resources of the department and its entities to stop the widening   digital divide as it will drive even further, the marginalization of women;
  • Women are the ones who will be more disadvantaged than men when it comes to access to the digital infrastructure.

The line of speakers and topic for discussions will ensure that, as women, we are all empowered to seize the moment and be the drivers of the digital revolution.

We can confirm that Ms Mbali Myeni, the Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Moses Kotane Institute of Technology and Mayor of King Cetshwayo District Municipality Cllr Nonhle Mkhulisi will form art of the first session.

Below is an executive roster of speakers:-

  •  “Strategies to bridge the gender digital divide”: Dr Upasana Gitanjali Singh – UKZN Lecture
  • “Digital Future Skills necessary for the new economy”: Ms Gugu Sema – MICT SETA
  •  “Innovation and technology starts-ups in township”: Ms Aurelia Alberts – CEO of Innovate Durban

  • Use of technology to advance women owned business”: Ms Thobekile Ndlovu-MD for Thibethulani Trading
  • “Building a small business on digital platform”: Ms Thandani Zulu - CEO of Food by the Gift
