Deputy Minister Makhotso Sotyu to lead the International Day of Forests Seminar and tree planting activity at the Nelson Mandela University - George Campus on Wednesday, 27 March 2024

The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Makhotso Sotyu, will lead the International Day of Forests (IDF) seminar at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) - George Campus on 27 March 2024. NMU is a forestry learning institution with a proven record of collaboration with various role-players, and the element of innovation aligns well with the youth.

The International Day of Forests was established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. This year, members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) will celebrate IDF 2024 under the theme Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World. The 2024 IDF program will highlight how forests can contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, ultimately fostering the creation of resilient and sustainable human settlements.

The activities linked to IDF will further focus on Agroforestry, one of the key induced innovations in forestry that aim to provide multiple benefits, including contribution to social, economic and ecological objectives, food security, income generation, additional fuel and fibre resources, carbon sequestration, erosion control, landscape rehabilitation and enhanced climate resilience.
