The Department of Environmental Affairs, together with the National Cleaner Production Centre for South Africa, will hold a National Sustainable Development Workshop from the 6th to 7th December 2012, at the CSIR in Pretoria.
This workshop is being held in a year (2012) that marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) by the World Summit on Sustainable Development. The workshop also comes against the backdrop of the successful conclusion of the United Nations (UN) Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), held in Brazil in June 2012, and Cabinet’s approval of the National Strategy on Sustainable Development.
The objective of the workshop is to promote the alignment of national initiatives on sustainable development to the priorities of the national sustainable development strategy. It also seeks to discuss the outcomes of Rio+20 and its implementation in the African region, as well as to share lessons learnt on promoting resource efficiency and cleaner production as ways to increase industrial sustainability and competitiveness.
The workshop will provide interactive engagement on national sustainable development issues between key national stakeholders, UN country representatives, the private sector and civil society.
The expected output of the workshop is a synthesis of ideas from participating stakeholders that will provide the basis for the development of South Africa’s position on the implementation of Rio+20 and the alignment of national sustainable development strategy-related interventions.
