Communicating human trafficking workshops for media professionals

The National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa (NPA) is organising a series of workshops on communicating human trafficking. The workshops, funded by the European Commission, are conducted by the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organisation (ITC-ILO) as part of the Tsireledzani! Programme and are hosted by South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Tshwane.

What: The workshops aim to equip media professionals with the knowledge and skills to better deal with human trafficking, including child trafficking, in their reports. This is expected to raise public awareness and contribute to prevention of human trafficking.

Why participate: Far from aiming at simply preaching do’s and don’ts to experienced professionals, the workshops intend to provide a common space to share experiences and promote debate among those dealing with this scourge. Government, international officials and representatives of civil society involved in the national action plan against human trafficking, together with renowned journalists from other regions of the world, will have the opportunity to contribute to the course with their own hands-on experience.

Who should participate: journalists, correspondents, publicists, freelance reporters, editors, publishers, public relations professionals and press officers working in all types of media (print, radio, television, web, communications departments) in the public and private spheres.

Where and when: Auckland Park 6 to 7 July and Durban 9 to 10 July 2009.

How to join: Participation at the workshops is free. In order to facilitate interaction and learning, the number of participants is limited to 20 for each event. The workshops will be held in English. Deadline for registration is 25 June 2009

*Tsireledzani! Means ‘let us protect’ in TshiVenda and is the name of the South African Government’s initiative to combat human trafficking. The programme, funded by the European Commission, is headed by the NPA and involves numerous government departments and civil society partners. The ILO is contributing to the programme with the piloting of an awareness raising strategy and by conducting media training activities.
