Committee visits Harmony Gold’s Eland shaft

Following its discussion on illegal mining in South Africa, Parliament’s Select Committee on Economic Development today (19 June 2009) conducting an oversight visit to Harmony Gold’s Eland shaft in Welkom.

Over 82 illegal miners recently died in Welkom after inhaling smoke and gas believed to be caused by underground fires in the abandoned shafts.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Freddie Adams, said the visit was part of the committee’s role to oversee departments and entities. He added that the committee wanted to familiarise itself with mining issues before debating illegal mining in the National Assembly.

After the visit, the committee will compile a report which will be tabled before the National Council of Provinces.
