Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) and Sonke launch reports on South Africa's compliance with the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA)

The Commission for Gender Equality in collaboration with Sonke Gender Justice Network (SGJN) will be launching their respective reports on South Africa's compliance with the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA) on 24 August 2010.

One of the powers and functions of the two institutions is to monitor the compliance with international conventions, conventions, covenants and international charters, acceded to or ratified by the Republic of South Africa relating to the objectives of the two institutions, and further prepare and submit the reports to relevant foras or stakeholders.

Given their respective mandates, CGE and Sonke decided to review the progress that has been made in terms of South Africa's compliance with BPFA.

For CGE, this is first for many to come in reviewing the implementation of international instruments by the South African government. It has been found that throughout the world, lack of action by governments and little advocacy from gender organisations and civil society has somewhat contributed to the slow implementation of the BPFA.

These reports should be viewed as an evaluation of how much progress has been made in the implementation at national level following the adoption of the Beijing Platform of Action.
