International Day for Persons with Disabilities

The majority of people with disabilities is South Africa has been excluded from the mainstream of society and has thus been prevented from accessing fundamental social, political and economic rights. The exclusion experienced by people with disabilities and their families is the result of range of factors for example

  • Social attitudes which have perpetuated stereotypes of disabled people as dependant and in need of care
  • Inaccessible public transport
  • Inaccessible and unsupportive work environment
  • Inadequate and inaccessible provision for vocation rehabilitation and training

The International for Persons with Disabilities is commemorated annually on the 3 December 2012 and as part of the commemoration , South Africa joined the family of nations by observing this day.

The Northern Cape Department of Social Development will be commemorating the International Day for Persons with Disabilities in Kuruman in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District on the 04 December 2012. The main of the awareness day will be

  • To highlight challenges experienced by persons with disabilities
  • To showcase the talents of persons with disabilities
  • To sensitise the community on the plight of Persons with Disabilities
  • To handover casual day trophy for the best district that depicted the spirit of the day.

We have also adopted the 2012 United Nations Theme for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities , which is “ Removing Barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all.

We have invited 150 persons with disabilities and 30 care –givers to celebrate the day with the Department of Social Development.
