Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi hosts Youth Month activities to promote social cohesion, 25 to 29 Jun

The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will host various youth month activities to educate the young people about the values of inclusivity, mutual respect, discipline, reconciliation and Ubuntu.

“As the nation remembers the fallen young heroes and heroines of 16 June 1976 under the theme, “Youth Moving South Africa Forward”,  the Department of Arts and Culture  will continue to educating the youth about historical important events as well as discussions on what should be done to move South Africa forward.

Through government programmes we seek to create a collective of patriotic young people who are disciplined, responsible, caring, confident, self-reliant and culturally aware, who through involvement in voluntary activities will contribute to personal, community and national development. It is then significant that in moving our country forward, we are conversant with our identity, our national symbols and our pride,” said Mabudafhasi.

As part of youth month long activities, the department will host the following activities as part of youth month programme:

1. U40-Network-South African Chapter Workshop (25-26 June 2015)

The U40 Network is an independent international civil society network recognised by UNESCO as a network to give young professionals, academics, researchers, students and artists an opportunity to debate and contribute to both local and global policies and programmes affecting the arts, culture and heritage sector. It targets young people under the age of 40 years old from all over the world. The Department will  set up an Interim Structure that will be tasked with the responsibility to formulate the U40-South African Chapter.

This workshop will take place on 25 June 2015 at National Library of South Africa, Pretoria at 8h30.  The aim of the Interim Structure will be to establish a South African Chapter of the U40 Network in June 2016, to ensure that our youth are provided with an opportunity to interact with their international counterparts and learn from one another.

2. Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) Gauteng North Branch Seminar (25 June 2015)

The Seminar will take place on 25 June 2015 at the University of Pretoria Education Library, Groenkloof Campus at 9h00. It will be hosted under the theme, “Libraries for development: action, integration and collaboration”. The purpose of the seminar is to look at how libraries and librarians position themselves regarding targets set for the National Development Plan and post millennium strategies and the impact thereof on the country’s set goals. The integration and collaboration of practitioners and administrators in sharing resources, methods, insights will be central at providing more efficient and effective services.

3. The Public Time Travel on Freedom Charter 1955/ 2015 (29 June 2015)

The department will host the Time Travel on Freedom Charter 1955/2015 at the Walter Sisulu Freedom Square, Kliptown, on 29 June 2015 at 9h00. The purpose of the event is to educate South African citizen of all races especially the youth to reflect on and express the importance of the Freedom Charter. The programme of the day will include re-enacting the scene and atmosphere of the Congress of the People in 1955 and the interpretation of the meaning of the Freedom Charter in modern-day South Africa.
