Members of the media are invited to a seminar on Living Human Treasures. On 6 September 2010, the Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Lulu Xingwana announced that the main theme for Heritage Month for the next two years is: Celebrating South Africa’s Living Human Treasures - the custodians of our Intangible Cultural Heritage. Living heritage can be defined as cultural expressions and practices that form a body of knowledge and provide continuity, dynamism and meaning of social life to generations of people as individuals, social groups and communities.
The department will host a seminar on Living Human Treasures on 30 September 2010. Minister Xingwana will open the seminar. The main objective of the seminar is to start a national dialogue that will further expand and elaborate on the concept of living human treasures as articulated in the draft national policy on South African living heritage.
One of the speakers, Dr Kenneth Netshiombo will provide a conceptual overview about the roles of individuals and communities in artistic creation. This will be followed by presentations by various experts in the field of arts and culture. The objective is to tap on their expertise and experience of knowledge and assist the department in its efforts promote living heritage in the country.
The programme features commissions on literature, film, theatre, craft, music and soccer. The commissions will produce recommendations which will form the basis of the development of a sustainable incentive framework for the transmission and transfer of skills.
