Candlelight memorial

The Premier of the Northern Cape, Ms H Jenkins and the provincial MEC of Health, Mr MS Sokatsha, cordially invites you to the provincial international candlelight memorial commemoration event.

The International Candlelight Memorial Week will be commemorated this year from 17 to 23 May 2009 under the theme “together, we are the solution.” The International Candlelight Memorial is the longest and largest grassroots mobilisation campaign for HIV and AIDS awareness in the world. It was first commemorated in 1983, and has since been observed internationally on the third Sunday of May every year for the past 25 years.

The candlelight memorial has brought people together individuals, organisations, sectors and communities to honour the lives of those lost to AIDS related illnesses, give support to people living with HIV and raise social consciousness about HIV and AIDS. This event also provides opportunities for the strengthening of leadership, policy advocacy, partnerships and social mobilization in response to HIV and AIDS.

Other dignitaries expected to accompany the MEC of Health are Members of the Provincial Executive Council, MPLs, Mayors and representatives from the non-governmental, community based and faith based sectors.
