Briefing by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, in partnership with the Afrikaanse Handels Instituut(AHI)

Today the Minister for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (DCGTA), Mr Sicelo Shiceka, will be meeting a delegation from the Afrikaanse Handels Instituut (AHI) to discuss the strengthening of the ongoing relationship between the Ministry and the AHI around issues of improving service delivery. The AHI will be lead by its President, Ms Venete Klein.

Some of the specific issues that will be discussed will include:

* An update of government's intervention in the Koukamma Municipality in the Eastern Cape. In 2008, the AHI brought to the department's attention the poor state of service delivery in this municipality, which prompted the intervention by government
* An update on the sanitation infrastructure and related sewage spillage challenges in the Emfuleni municipality in Gauteng
* The status of water and sanitation in Marble Hall Municipality and the relationship between the municipality and the Marble Hall Business Chamber
* A review on Local Economic Development (LED) in South Africa and the identification of specific towns for targeted LED interventions
* The challenge of non-payment regarding municipal taxes / services in some municipalities across the country.
