Minister Dipuo Peters launches 2014 National Festive Season Road Safety campaign, 28 Nov

Minister of Transport, Hon. Dipuo Peters, together with MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Hon. Butana Komphela, will launch the 2014 National Festive Season Road Safety Campaign in the Free State on Friday, 28 November 2014.

The Minister  will be joined during the launch by Deputy Minister of transport, Hon Sindisiwe chikunga, provincial MECs for Roads and Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Board Chairpersons and CEOs of state-owned agencies, non-governmental organisations, inter-faith and inter-denominational leaders, key transport stakeholders and members of the community.

The 2014 Festive Season Road Safety campaign will focus on and highlight:

  • heightened and intensified education and law enforcement activities throughout the country,
  • road safety tips for motorists and pedestrians alike,
  • hazardous spots for road users,
  • public and private partnerships in road safety to reduce the carnage

Traffic law enforcement officers and officials will step up road safety operations throughout the festive period in order to reduce the carnage on the roads.

In March 2010 the United Nations General Assembly resolution 64/255 proclaimed a Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011/20 with the goal of stabilizing and then reducing levels of road traffic fatalities around the world by increasing activities conducted at national, regional and global levels.

The struggle to end road deaths has now become a matter for international solidarity. The Department has formed various partnerships with businesses and organised labour in an effort to end the carnage on our roads.

The road safety tag

The Road Safety Tag (badge) is worn as a demonstration and individual support for the Decade of Action for Road Safety. It also serves as a personal commitment to be safe and do the right thing when using the roads.

Road safety tips

  • Obey all the rules of the road without exception.
  • A road death is not a normal death. Play your part to prevent one.
  • Motorists and pedestrians should look out for each other at all times.
  • Your car is a means of transport not a murder weapon. Use it responsibly

The United Nations Road Safety Collaboration was instrumental in developing the global plan which depicts the 5 key pillars, namely Road Safely Management, Safe Roads and mobility, Safer Vehicles, Safer Road Users and Post-crash response.

While road traffic deaths and injuries can actually be prevented, they injure and kill millions of people every year. Road traffic injuries also result in enormous costs to individuals, families and society, thus providing support and care for injured victims and bereaved families should be an integral part of the post-crash response.
