Public Works hosts Kamoso Awards and Expanded Public Works Programme Summit, 26 to 28 Nov

The 4th EPWP Summit will provide a blueprint on how government working together with business, civil society and communities will achieve its target of creating 6 million work opportunities by 2019

With Government committing to create 6 million work opportunities by 2019 through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), the Minister of Public Works TW Nxesi (MP) will  host the annual Kamoso Awards and two day EPWP Summit respectively on 26-28 November 2014 at St George Hotel, Gauteng.

The Summit will be hosted under the theme “EPWP Phase 3: Towards increased community participation and developmental impact.”

The Summit is significant because it comes a month after the State President Jacob Zuma launched the Third Phase of EPWP, which is set to create the 6 million work opportunities by 2019. The Summit also comes exactly ten years since the launch of the EPWP as a Government programme to alleviate poverty through creation of work opportunities.

Among the delegates who are expected to attend the EPWP summit are EPWP lead sector departments, namely: Departments of Environmental Affairs, Social Development and the department of Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs (COGTA).

The objectives of the 2014 Summit are as follows:

  • Accelerating the implementation of EPWP by all implementing public bodies
  • Improve the delivery of work opportunities under EPWP
  • To discuss the roll out plan of the EPWP Phase 3 and implementation by all public bodies
  • To report on the EPWP delivery progress since the 2012 summit
  • To discuss how the Programme will operationalize the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Public Employment Programme

Meanwhile, Minister T W Nxesi is also expected to deliver a key note address at the Kamoso Awards ceremony scheduled to take place on the 26 November 2014. The Kamoso awards were institutionalised in 2007 to recognise and reward best performing public sector bodies that have excelled in the implementation of EPWP in the preceding year.
