Mineral Resources briefs Parliament on derelict and ownerless mines, 12 Nov

The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources will tomorrow, 12 November 2014 be briefed by the department on the progress made thus far to address challenges associated with derelict and ownerless mines.

The briefing by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) comes in the wake of the oversight visit conducted by the Committee to assess the conditions at these mines in the Gauteng province in September 2014, during which the Committee discovered that derelict and ownerless mines attract illegal mining activities.

“It is against this backdrop that the Committee wants to know about the progress made by the DMR to address these mines, in which we believe the solution will subsequently curb illegal activities. We therefore need to establish if there may be any challenges that the department is facing in dealing with this matter so that we can assist in addressing them,” said Mr Sahlulele Luzipho, Committee Chairperson.
