Water and Sanitation commemorates Sanitation Month in Northern Cape, 10 to 31 May

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in the Northern Cape, working with various local municipalities in the province, will commemorate National Sanitation Month from 10 – 31 May 2022.

Awareness on hygiene, and end-user education on sanitation facilities are an on-going programme of the Department of Water and Sanitation. However, during the month of May each year, efforts are intensified to reach out to communities and stakeholders.

The Department of Water and Sanitation in partnership with the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality in Kimberley, will on the 10 May 2022 raise awareness with the community of Phutanang about the importance of not dumping foreign objects in toilets and the sewer system which results in blockages and causes a health hazard for all.

Therefore, a Faecal Sludge Management workshop will be held in the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality in Upington on the 12 May 2022 to raise the profile of the importance of sanitation operation and maintenance.

In line with the National Development Plan and Sustainable Development Goals, South Africa is accelerating the provision of hygiene and sanitation services to restore the dignity of all.

In July 2010, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed a resolution declaring the right to safe and clean drinking water and dignified sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of life and human rights.
