The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) statement on the elections

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), which is coordinating all security and law enforcement operations throughout the country, is satisfied that all deployments are in place and that the General Election 2014 is proceeding smoothly.

The departments deployed from or represented at the National Joint Operational Centre (NATJOC) of the NATJOINTS include:

  • • The South African Police Service
  • • The South African National Defence Force
  • • The National Prosecuting Authority
  • • The Department of Health
  • • The Department of International Relations and Cooperation
  • • ESKOM
  • • The Independent Electoral Commission
  • • The Intelligence Coordinating Committee
  • • The Metro Police

The South African Police Service holds the chairmanship of the NATJOINTS and the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Riah Phiyega, is personally monitoring the security force’s operation today.

To date, 97 individuals have been arrested by law enforcement officials for election-related offences and 131 cases have been registered.

The NATJOINTS is appreciative of the festive and peaceful spirit in which the citizens of South Africa have taken to the polls, despite long queues in some areas.
