National Environment Month 2014

1 - 30 June

The celebration of the Environment Month is an annual event on the calendar of South Africa’s environment sector. It will be celebrated this June under the theme‘International Year of Small Islands Developing States’’ (SIDS) and the slogan is‘’Raise your voice, not the sea level’’.

The celebration of the Environment Month is characterised by celebration of World Environment Day (WED), World Oceans Day and the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought and other activities that will be used to accentuate the message of environmental preservation.

The celebration is used to showcase the sterling work South Africa is doing in the preservation of the environment as well as the creation of job opportunities – both central to the work of DEA.

WED activities take place all year round but climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere. The celebration of WED began in 1972 and has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action. Through WED, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is able to personalise environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.
