Launch of the South Africa's phase two report of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions

South Africa is on course regarding the implementation of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention and continues taking big strides in its enforcement and welcomes recommendations by the OECD working group on bribery.

Government, the private sector and civil society organisations continue to devise strategies to further advance this course. Working with the OECD, South Africa today welcomes the phase two report, regarding the implementation and enforcement of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention.

The review report of South Africa's phase two OECD compliance has highlighted a number of positive measures in place to strengthen our implementation and application of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention.

These include a strong legislative framework for combating foreign bribery, the new Companies Act and its far reaching obligations for the private sector, the establishment of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

The report has highlighted areas where there is a need for strengthened efforts. We welcome the recommendations by the working group to further enhance our implementation efforts.

These include raising awareness of the fight against foreign bribery in both the public and the private sector, enhancing law enforcement resources and training and ensuring that companies that engage in foreign bribery are duly held liable.

We remain committed to the fight against corruption and working closely with all the stakeholders, nationally and internationally, in this regard.

The report is available on the OECD and the Department of Public Service and Administration websites: http://www.oecd.org/daf/nocorruption and http://www.dpsa.gov.za
