New spirit of co-operation between province and city on housing

The first Housing Intergovernmental Relations meeting between the Provincial Department of Housing and the City of Cape Town’s Housing Department since the new MEC for Housing assumed office took place this morning. The meeting was conducted in a highly co-operative spirit, auguring well for housing delivery in the Western Cape and the City of Cape Town.

There was a commitment from all elected and appointed officials to work together in the interest of every citizen in the province.

Key items addressed included:

1. Granting of housing accreditation to the city

It was agreed at the meeting that an intergovernmental task team would be established to develop a phased plan to grant the City of Cape Town housing accreditation. Granting full housing accreditation to the City is a key priority of the new provincial administration because the City of Cape Town has the capacity to significantly increase the rate of housing delivery.

2. Release of provincial land

The province agreed to release its audit of all provincial land available for development and to be used in the event of winter flooding. A meeting was set up between the provincial and city officials to discuss how to best utilise the parcels of land identified and implement a plan for land transfer going forward.

3. Future of N2 Gateway Project

Provincial Housing Department officials will be meeting the representative of the Housing Development Agency in the technical MinMec meeting on Tuesday. The purpose of the meeting is to find common ground and forge a strong working relationship in order to address the challenges associated with the N2 Gateway Project.

Political change in the province means that there will be a realignment of shared priorities between the province and the City of Cape Town. We look forward to working together and unblocking any logjams between our respective spheres of government to deliver for all the people.
