Invitation for permit applications to export agricultural products to the European market

A trade development and cooperation agreement (TDCA) between the European Union (EU) and the Republic of South Africa was established and entered into force on 1 January 2000.

This agreement provides for the establishment of a free trade area between the European Union and South Africa in accordance with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules and for the strengthening of European development assistance for South Africa.

As part of the concession provided under the TDCA, the European Union has agreed to grant tariff preferences on limited quantities of selected products in the form of tariff quotas.

In line with the agreement, export permits for cheese, cut flowers, frozen strawberries, canned fruit (pears, apricots and peaches), frozen orange juice, pineapple juice, apple juice and white and red wine will be issued at reduced levels of duty into the European Union market.

The detailed information regarding the application administration and the allocation of export permits to the European Union was published on 17 September 2010 in the Government Gazette No. 33535, Notice No. 854 of 2010. Export permits will be issued only to registered exporters in South Africa for exportation to specific European countries.

All exporters and potential exporters interested in exporting any of the products stipulated in the schedule (as published in Government Gazette No.33535 of 17 September 2010, Notice No. 854 of 2010 and available on the department's website: http//www.daff.gov.za/publications in the calendar year 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2011), are hereby invited to submit their applications on or before 15 October 2010 in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
