Campaign to popularise our national symbols will be launched

Following what is being heralded by many as a very successful election and in line with the celebration of Freedom Day the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape will this week launch a campaign to popularise our national symbols.

A key element of the campaign is the publication of a poster to popularise our national symbols. The poster will be distributed through schools, museums, libraries and Thusong Centres through the Western Cape.

The campaign poster features all nine of the symbols, namely the national flag highlighting the flag and the correct usage thereof, the national fish which is the Galjoen, the national flower which is the Protea, the national tree which is the Real Yellowwood, the national animal which is the Springbok, and the national bird which is the Blue Crane. Further more the poster also provides information on the National Orders, the National Anthem and Coat of Arms.

Freedom Day 2009 occurs a mere five days after millions of South Africans once again stood in snaking queues around the country, happily reaping the tangible fruits of democracy by participating in a free and fair provincial and national election. The national symbols are symbolic reminder of the hard won democracy and the unity that we share as South Africans.
