Acting Premier calls on IPID to investigate infant's death

North West Acting Premier Paul Sebegoe has called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to investigate the circumstance surrounding the death of a three-month old baby who is alleged to have died due to inhalation of teargas smoke fired by public order police who were dispersing the protesting and illegally gathered crowd in Majakaneng on Saturday.

“We are saddened by the loss of life of the infant and wish to appeal for calm while we await the outcome of a postmortem which will assist determine the cause of the death,” Acting Premier Sebegoe said.

“We appeal to the community to exercise restraint, desist from illegal violent protests and give the interventions aimed at fast tracking water connections a chance. We cannot afford more loss of lives and destruction of public and private properties,” added Sebegoe.

The Acting Premier said that Eskom has committed to electrify the five boreholes that had been drilled to augment water supply within two weeks.

“Water tankering as provided by International Ferrochrome Metal Mine is a temporary intervention while vandalised water reticulation infrastructure such as taps, water meters and pipes which had to been damaged are being repaired, ”he emphasised.
