African Peer Review Mechanism
11 July 2006
The Western Cape Provincial Parliament is in full support of the work and
objectives of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to promote good
governance on the continent, says Western Cape Provincial Speaker Mr Shaun
Byneveldt.
Speaker Byneveldt says: "The democratic structures, such as our Provincial
Parliament and legislatures in their oversight function, are part of the
process and will fully co-operate where it can. It is great to see the African
Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) as part of the New Partnership for Africaâs
Development (NEPAD) objectives coming to visible fruition. The progress from
concept to practice is welcomed. If all goes well with our continent and
country, our province will also prosper."
The first official handing over ceremony takes place in Pretoria tomorrow
where the country's self-assessment report will be received by the review
mission under leadership of Prof. Adebayo Adedeji of Nigeria.
The report will be presented by Minister of Public Service and
Administration, Geraldine Fraser Moleketi who chairs the APRM Governing Council
in South Africa. Various dignitaries, including Pres. Thabo Mbeki, will attend
the ceremony.
The APRM is a self-monitoring tool aimed at promoting good governance on the
continent through the adoption of laws, policies and practices that will lead
to political stability, economic growth, sustainable development and the
continents economic integration. This will contribute towards development and
fighting poverty.
Speaker Byneveldt will also meet with the mission team for an individual
interview before its departure.
