The MEC for Local Government and Housing in the Western Cape, Qubudile
Richard Dyantyi, will tomorrow launch the weather service and school programme
initiatives as part of the international strategy on disaster reduction (ISDR)
week, 8 to 12 October 2007.
This will be done in a press conference that will be addressed by the MEC at
27 Wale Street on 9 October 2007. In an effort to respond pro-actively to
disaster management in the Western Cape, the Department of Local Government and
Housing through its Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), the South
African Weather Service (SAWS), the Department of Education and the City of
Cape Town together with the district municipalities are supporting the
International Strategy on Disaster Reduction (ISDR) week and will be launching
the weather service and school programme initiatives.
This week will be ended with the Provincial Advisory Forum (PAF) meeting,
which is to take place on 11 and 12 October 2007 in Beaufort West. One of the
agenda points to be discussed is basic service delivery with a special focus on
the state of fire readiness, problems and weak areas experienced, as well as
budgets allocated for fire brigade services. As fire brigade services forms
part of the Directorate Disaster Management and Fire Brigade Services, this
opportunity will also be used to emphasise the week's activities and the
province's intent to implement strategies and measures to enforce disaster risk
reduction begins at school in support of the ISDR week.
Disaster Management is everybody's business and it will require everybody's
efforts to effectively deal with disasters and more importantly, to also be
proactively, in prevent them from occurring. With all departments and
municipalities supporting the ISDR initiatives this will contribute towards
"Making the Western Cape a safe home and resilient community for all".
