of the Fire Prevention in the province
18 December 2007
In a bid to reduce and make awareness on fire prevention in the province,
the MEC for Local Government and Housing in the Western Cape, Qubudile Richard
Dyantyi accompanied by Councillor Shubane of the Stellenbosch Municipality, the
officials from the Disaster Management, Stellenbosch Municipality and the
province will tomorrow, 19 December 2007, launch this year's Fire Awareness
Campaign in Khayamandi.
This province is very prone to fires, especially informal settlement fires,
which destroy hundreds of dwellings each year, as well as veld and forest
fires, which affects the farming activities, forestry and plantations that
provide work to hundreds of our people and the nature conservation areas. This
is evident in the huge fires that rage throughout the province during the
summer season every year.
In December 2006, the department hosted the first Fire Awareness Campaign,
with the main objective being to highlight:
* the common cause of fires
* the undesirable consequences such as the destruction of life and
property
* fire preventative measures.
This year the purpose of the campaign will emphasise the importance of fire
preventative measures and the enforcement of the by-laws by the municipalities.
Your attendance at the launch will be highly appreciated.
