The Minister of Social Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya, will launch the
Recruitment and Retention Strategy for social workers and celebrate World
Social Work Day on 17 March 2009, in Vosloorus, East of Johannesburg.
The department has been working on a Recruitment and Retention Strategy in
order to improve the working conditions of social workers, to retain the
current pool of social workers and to attract young people to the
profession.
The department will be celebrating World Social Work Day for the first time,
as part of raising the stature of the profession and to acknowledge the
sterling work of social workers. The day is celebrated on the third week of
March annually in the world, and it recognises the role being played by social
work professionals across the sector in developing a caring society and
fighting poverty.
"This is a small way for us to applaud social work professionals, who,
despite challenging circumstances facing the profession, have contributed
tremendously in making a difference in the lives of many people and the
development of the profession itself. The contributions that the social workers
have made are essential to social stability, respect for human rights and
promotion of family values," Minister Skweyiya said.
