Motheo District to launch campaign on importance of strong families and family
values
20 February 2007
MEC for the Department of Social Development Zanele Dlungwana will visit the
community of Botshabelo in Motheo District to launch the provincial campaign
that aims at helping the society to reclaim the importance of strong families
and the respect for values that have historically kept family unit intact.
The campaign, which will run throughout the province from 21 February to 3
March 2007, is targeting people within the family units, especially youth,
unemployed people, the churches, and the women's guild which will also form
part of the target. Although the department is already funding a number of
programmes that are aimed at building socially cohesive and empowered
communities, communities still face challenges from many social ills that
undermine their stability and cohesiveness.
The social ills such as the collapse of families, the scourge of HIV/AIDS,
the increasing numbers of orphaned and vulnerable children, the increasing rate
of child prostitution, substance abuse, street children and poverty undermine
the advances of our young democracy and its remarkable economic growth.
According to research commissioned to the Human Science Research Council (HSRC)
in 2002 to 2003 by the national Department of Social Development, families in
South Africa are undergoing tremendous changes and continue to experience
difficulties in fulfilling their duties. Challenges are related to
socio-political and economic forces, such as changes in family structure,
family disintegration, poverty, migration, HIV/AIDS pandemic and
globalisation.
Objectives of the Campaign:
* to raise awareness about the effects and the impact of HIV/AIDS in our
communities, especially the peri-urban and rural areas of the Free State
* to use celebrities as role models to spread the positive message of
prevention and leading positive productive lives
* to promote the family as a vital institution of society that can strengthen
government initiatives to reverse the negative effects of social ills such as
moral degeneration, the spread of HIV/AIDS, the increased rates of substance
abuse amongst the youth, as well as the occurrences of orphaned and vulnerable
children.
