Government departments to meet National Youth Commission (NYC)
to give details of their work in support of youth development

23 March 2009

As government rounds up its business for the 2008/09 financial year, the
National Youth Commission will meet representatives from 25 national government
departments in an Interdepartmental Committee on Youth Affairs (IDC) in
Pretoria on 24 March 2009. During the meeting, departments will give details of
the work they have done as well as their shortcomings in implementing youth
development as part of their programmes. The meeting will also discuss the
review of the Government Social Cluster Programme of Action 2008/09.

This meeting will in essence seek to track progress made concerning the
prioritisation and mainstreaming of youth development by the respective
departments. In light of the upcoming merger of the NYC and the Umsombumvu
Youth Fund, the meeting will also craft a way forward on how departments will
work with the National Youth Development Agency in tackling challenges facing
young people.

Whilst the NYC is required to advise government departments on an ongoing
basis on priority focus areas in their planning to integrate youth development,
departments are mandated to integrate in their plans programmes aimed at the
development of young people. This interdepartmental committee meeting has since
become a platform where departments account on the work they are undertaking
towards advancing youth development.
