Issues affecting artists and crafters will be brought under the spotlight
when KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture and Tourism Ms Weziwe Thusi officially
opens the province's first ever Visual Arts and Craft Indaba. The Indaba will
give both the department and artists the platform to shape the future for the
sector. The Visual Arts Indaba is one of the many interventions by the
Department to engage artists about issues affecting them. More than 300 artists
(mostly women) from across the province will attend. They will be addressed by
experts from the national Department of Arts and Culture, KZN Department of
Economic Development as well as the University of Zululand.
Topics to be discussed include:
* the creation of sustainable jobs through crafts
* accessibility of raw materials
* access to national and international market
* intellectual property and copyright
* marketing and networking
* formation of co-ordination structure
* identification of policy gaps and recommendations.
The two-day Indaba will also see launch of Operation Qedindlala, a
departmental initiative aimed at empowering and developing crafters through
training and support. Journalists and photographers are invited.
