International Football Association (Fifa) World Cup
13 November 2007
The Honourable MEC of Provincial Safety, Liaison and Transport, Mr Thobile
Mhlahlo, who is also the Chairperson of the Social Needs Cluster, stated that
departments should not see the 2010 Fifa World Cup as a football issue but
something which cuts across all departments.
Mr Mhlahlo was addressing delegates at the Social Needs Cluster meeting held
at Fish River Sun on Friday, 9 November 2007.
The health department also forms part of the Social Needs Cluster, where it
was encouraged that the Cluster work as a collective and integrates its work to
fast track implementation of service delivery.
The Chairperson commended the cluster for being the first one to meet in
this fashion. He made mention of the fact that government departments worked in
isolation in the past.
Mr Mhlahlo also encouraged departments to share state resources because
their areas had inadequate infrastructure.
The Chairperson advised that district managers should meet with the mayors
as the constitutional heads in the respective areas in order to address service
delivery issues.
He commented that the government had to respond to all challenges as a
collective citing HIV and AIDS as but one amongst such challenges
