MEC Mhlahlo to launch multimillion Alicedale Road Construction
Project and Cacadu District Sakha Isizwe Community Based Transportation
Programme

8 October 2007

As part of celebrating Transport Month, October 2007, Eastern Cape MEC for
Safety, Liaison, Roads and Transport, Thobile Mhlahlo, will officially launch
the Alicedale Road Construction Project and Cacadu District Sakha Isizwe at
Alicedale Stadium on Tuesday, 9 October 2007 at 9h00.

This multimillion road construction project starts from N10 to Alicedale and
will take place for a period of 32 months and 120 local people are benefiting.
This intervention forms part of many other interventions that have been made by
provincial government to eradicate poverty in the area. The Bushman Sands
development is a visible example and there are more projects that are still
coming to this area, including the building of an International Rugby Academy.
This intervention will further enable government to link Alicedale with the
2010 Federation International Football Association (Fifa) World Cup activities,
which will take place mostly in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

At this event, MEC Mhlahlo is expected to further launch the expansion of
the Department of Roads and Transport's Sakha Isizwe Community Based
Transportation Programme in the Cacadu District, where 985 households have been
identified. This programme is in line with the Provincial Growth and
Development Plan, Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa
(AsgiSA) and Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) objectives, which include
skills acquisition through empowerment of communities, poverty alleviation,
among others. The main aim of Sakha Isizwe Community Based Transportation
Programme is to institutionalise and guarantee a more balanced transportation
system throughout the Eastern Cape province, and at the same time, to create
new work and business opportunities for the disadvantaged communities.

Through the Sakha Isizwe Household Contractors Programme, more than 2 500
households have been appointed in Amathole (655), Alfred Nzo (501), Chris Hani
(495), OR Tambo (540) and Ukhahlamba (380) Districts. The Cacadu District
households are from areas such as Nelson Mandela Metro, Camdeboo, Blue Crane
Route, Makana, Ndlambe, Sunday's River, Kouga, Koukamma, Baviaans and Ikwezi.
The household contractors' work entails road maintenance, upgrading,
construction, focus on roadside animal management, fencing, pedestrian safety,
footpaths, non-motorised transport, gabion basket manufacturing, rangers
etc.

MEC Mhlahlo will further hand over the department's donation of equipment,
including a computer, to the Nonkqubela HIV and AIDS Project.
