first alternative technology house for Eastern Cape
2 April 2009
Housing and Safety and Liaison MEC Thobile Mhlahlo will unveil to the media
the first completed alternative technology house from the Zanemvula innovation
hub on Thursday, 9 April 2009.
Imision alternative building technology is also widely used and successful
in Gauteng and Western Cape provinces. Using imision alternative technology, it
is possible to have a house roofed on the first day and occupied on the third
day making it possible for contractors to deliver between 50 and 75 houses a
week leading to 300 houses completed a month. This number has never been met
using brick and mortar with only a 150 houses completed a month.
The current housing back log of 80 000 houses in the metro can be addressed
in a year (267 days) by using this alternative technology. Due to the
sequential way of assembling this system it is not possible to have certain
aspects like brick force and lintels being omitted during the building of the
house, if there is any items omitted the house will not stand leaving no room
for shoddy workmanship during the construction of a house using this
product.
All the materials used in the imision system are quality material which is
suitable for all types of houses. Special features include a plascon waterproof
paint, meranti doors, precast door frames, aluminium windows, internal plaster,
electrical fittings and kitchen furniture which comes as part of a package.
When using this technology, a house is plastered internally and externally
which will be good for communities who can't afford to make improvements in
their homes. Imision building technology also offers good opportunity for
vulnerable groups like women, youth and disabled persons to participate in the
building of houses in big numbers.
The department has studied the technical suitability of the technology and
requested erection of a show house within one of department's projects in Port
Elizabeth.
The MEC will be launching this new technology house in Port Elizabeth on
Thursday, 9 April 2009 at Zanemvula innovation hub. On this day, a 90 year old
disabled woman who had waited to own a house for years will be given a house
with a special ramp by the MEC Thobile Mhlahlo after the unveiling of the
Imision building technology house.
The media is invited to the unveiling of the Imision building technology and
handover of a house to a disabled woman, all in Port Elizabeth on Thursday, 9
April 2009 at 10h00.
