Housing, safety and liaison MEC Thobile Mhlahlo will hand over 150 youth
built houses to unemployed people and seasonal pine farm workers at Bethurst,
Port Alfred on 19 February 2009 starting at 10h00. The housing project is a
youth led initiative where local youth were trained and built 150 houses at a
cost of six million rands.
100 youth were recruited on to the project for brick laying, plumbing,
carpentry and project management. This is a third youth initiative by Mhlahlo.
He has already launched Sakhithemba youth graduate development programme
employing more than 80 youths with built environment qualifications, 40 housing
consumer practitioners with social sciences.
The beneficiaries from this project have been living in shacks for more than
15 years and the houses will provide a safe and secure shelter in an area where
heavy rainfalls and storms have destroyed homes and shacks. The media is
invited to capture the historic handover. The handover will be held as
