T Mbeki congratulates D Lessing on Nobel Prize

President Mbeki congratulates Doris Lessing for Nobel
Prize

11 October 2007

President Thabo Mbeki has congratulated southern African writer Doris
Lessing (88) upon today's award of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Ms Lessing's position against colonialism and white supremacy in the region
as well as her views on gender equality has been consistent, inspiring and
unwavering. For instance her first novel, The Grass is Singing and her 1957
memoir, Going Home, are both devastating in their critique of apartheid and
colonialism.

Ms Lessing's long overdue acclaim joins that of JM Coetzee in 2003 and that
of Nadine Gordimer in 1991 in confirming the high and proper place of southern
Africa and the continent as a real crucible in world literature.
