President Thabo Mbeki to chair the Presidential Working Group
on Higher Education

President Thabo Mbeki will tomorrow, 8 May 2007, chair the Presidential
Working Group on Higher Education taking place at the Union Buildings in
Pretoria.

The meeting will consider the synthesis report on the role of higher
education in a developmental state. The report was tabled at the last meeting
of the Working Group, held on 19 April 2006.

The review process focuses on areas including resourcing, regulations, and
effective management and governance.

The President will be accompanied by Deputy President Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka, Minister in the Presidency Dr Essop Pahad, Ministers of
Education Naledi Pandor, Finance Trevor Manuel, Science and Technology Mosibudi
Mangena, Deputy Ministers of Education Enver Surty and Arts and Culture
Ntombazana Botha

Higher Education will be represented by, among others, Professor Swartz of
the University of Fort Hare, Professor Makgoba of the University of
KwaZulu-Natal, Prof. Mokgalong of the University of Limpopo, Dr Leatt of the
University of Venda for Science and Technology, Prof. Tyobeka of the Tshwane
University of Technology and Prof. Nongxa of the University of
Witwatersrand.
