Premier Thabang Makwetla will deliver an annual address to the third sitting
of the Third Democratic Mpumalanga House of Traditional Leaders on Friday, 23
March 2007 at the Provincial Legislative Chambers in Nelspruit.
Speaking during the opening of the First session of the Third Democratic
Mpumalanga House of Traditional Leaders in 2005, Premier Makwetla said: "As
government we are committed to continue forging closer developmental relations
with traditional leaders, in order to ensure that the people in traditional
communities also have the possibility to participate in the processes of
socio-economic development to which we are all committed. We all agreed that
government, at all levels, is there to serve the needs and aspirations of our
people."
He further said: "We are sure that you are quite aware of the high premium
that this government places on the institution of traditional leadership and
the high regard that we have for your contribution to society. We do so because
of our conviction that as traditional leaders you have a critical role to play
in our integrated rural development programme. We knew then (as we know now)
that government alone will not be able to face the monumental challenges
imposed on us by our popular mission."
The opening of this session provides an opportunity for traditional leaders
to know the policy directives of the provincial government and how to
strengthen partnership with government to realise a better life for all.
Members of the Executive Council, Mayors, senior government officials,
traditional leaders throughout the province, leaders of business, non
governmental organisations and other dignitaries are expected to grace the
ceremony.
