fire victims
27 June 2007
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) today made a substantial
donation of blankets, and foodstuffs to victims of the fire which ravaged the
Salvation Army's Goodwill House in Kimberley. The building was gutted by fire
yesterday after one of the homeless occupants tried to make fire at the
fire-place in the building.
In handing over the social relief goods, the SASSA Acting Regional Manager,
Mr Kholekile Nogwili explained that this gesture is part of SASSA's Winter
Relief Programme and it comes timeously to the fire victims as Kimberley's
temperature is hovering around an all-time low this year. He further said that
this donation is not the last one that SASSA will make to the home because the
Salvation Army is also a partner of SASSA. A continuous needs analysis will be
done and SASSA's response will be demand driven. He also made a call to all
members of the public and businesses to also dip their hands in their pockets
and come to the party so that the destitute can be assisted during these trying
times.
A Salvation Army Captain, Ms Desiree Schrickker explained that a thorough
investigation is underway and that she is looking for alternative accommodation
for the 37 homeless people affected by the fire which caused damage worth R500
000.
