South African Police Service on launch of SAPS Journal Online

Launch of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Journal
Online website

19 March 2007

The South African Police Service is proud to announce the launch of the SAPS
Journal Online website as one of its achievements in the history of the
SAPS.

The SAPS Journal Online is designed to assist in the dissemination of
information, not only to the mainstream media, but also to the general public
and other stakeholders who stand to benefit from it.

The purpose of this website is primarily to stimulate public participation
and contribution towards the fight against crime, through interaction between
the police and the general public. Therefore the public has an important active
role to play by being vigilant and taking precaution against becoming victims
of crime.

The website will carry information on police initiatives and successes, in
respect of crime combating and investigation of crime. The site will provide
South Africans, and the world, with stories ranging from policemen and women
who risked their lives fighting crime and saving others to those of dedicated
investigating officers who have spent days and nights pursuing criminals in
order to bring them to book. We will also showcase stories of convicted rapists
and murderers who were sentenced to spend life behind bars.

Even before the site was officially launched, there was an overwhelming
interest shown in the Journal Online. By Friday, 16 March 2007 the site already
had more than 31 000 hits, with more than a 130 stories captured.

We are indeed excited that the website will create an opportunity for
interaction between the community and the police on an ongoing basis. The
community is therefore afforded an opportunity to use the website to make
positive contributions towards the fight against crime in our beautiful
country.

The Journal Online works on the content management system which gives full
control and direct access to the site 24 hours a day. We are one of the first
Government departments in South Africa to have this system in place.

The site can be accessed on http://www.sapsjournalonline.gov.za.
